The second edition of the Winter Music festival series focuses on one theme: tragedy. An essential element of this art form, which dates back to ancient times, is an unsolvable conflict that inevitably causes the main character to fail. The tragedy of man in tragedy lies in his overestimation of himself, in wanting to counteract the fate predetermined for him through his actions – knowingly or unknowingly.
In the program curated by Annesley Black and Samir Odeh-Tamimi of works by members of the Academy of Arts, staged and performed by the Zafraan Ensemble, this theme is shown (indirectly) and in many ways: as the fate of individual sound events, as the inevitability of the disappearance of one Sound in silence, as archaeological exploration, as a reference to political or social events or as an expression of a mental crisis or a passionate outburst of anger.
The curatorial starting point for this program is Vinko Globokar’s La Prison, in which the composer does not allow the eight instrumentalists to play a “normal” note. The ancient tragedy is timeless and present, and the question remains: How do people act when they no longer see a way out?
