The Zafraan Ensemble is invited again to the Ultraschall Festival Berlin, this time with current pieces by Zeynep Gedizlioglu, Ricardo Eizirik, Elena Mendoza, Samir Odeh-Tamimi and a world premiere by Laure Leander aka Martin Hiendl. The concert will take place on January 19, 2019 at 5 p.m. in the home port of Neukölln.
New music lives not least through its ensemble culture – formations whose regular line-up deviates from all standard classical-romantic patterns. And whose members are ensemble players as well as outstanding soloists. In this concert, three solo works are juxtaposed with two ensemble pieces. In addition to Ricardo Eizirik’s Obsessive Compulsive Music , heard here for the first time in the version for saxophone, cello and expanded piano, Laure Leander aka Martin Hiendl uses the special line-up of flute, saxophone, harp and percussion for the new work Contretemps/Soliloquy (via Fred Moten). , piano, violin and cello and also contributes the live electronics. The new work is a composition commissioned by the Zafraan Ensemble.
In solo works, however, solo does not just mean playing one instrument alone. Elena Mendoza wrote The Power of Habit for a speaking violinist. The poem of the same name by Hans Magnus Enzensberger deals with the paradoxes, but also with the danger of the familiar.
