On November 21, 2015, the Hanover Society for New Music is organizing a double portrait concert with the Zafraan Ensemble of the composers Woosung Cho from Korea and Cheng-Wen Chen from Taiwan.
Woosung Cho has long studied Zhuangzi, one of the most important Daoist philosophers in Chinese culture, particularly his famous parable of the butterfly’s dream. He tries to translate the phase of transformation and the different states into music. Woosung Cho thus experimentally develops his special approach to the topics of time, sound and form. The compositions to be performed were reworked during his fellowship, and a new composition for flute and live electronics will also be premiered.
The composer Cheng-Wen Chen is very influenced by his cultural roots, especially by the Chinese philosophy of Laozi, and tries to make this accessible to European understanding through his music. In “Orchid” the symbolic level reflects a humble person in Chinese literature. In »Libra« the balance/harmony is explored sonically and scenically.
The venue, St. Mark’s Church in Hanover, has special acoustics that are very suitable for such smaller ensembles and electronic compositions. In addition, St. Mark’s Church sees itself as a cultural church, a place of encounter and dialogue. The Kulturkirche will organize a discussion event to embed the topic.
