Music of Many
In the historic hall of the Hamburger Bahnhof, Cage and Stockhausen come together in a staged concert. Within the large-scale installation ‘We Make Years Out of Hours’ by the Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelytė, the Zafraan Ensemble – acting as a satellite of the Music of Changes music theatre – weaves together two works by the composers in collaboration with singers from the opera ensemble: Cage’s *Hymns and Variations* (1979) traces the path ‘from something to nothing and back again’ through the random thinning out of religious hymns, whilst Stockhausen’s instrumental piece *Stop* (1965) creates an intense, physical experience of presence and energy from suddenly interrupted sound events – a dynamic happening. Building on these pieces, the installation itself becomes a score. Perception takes centre stage, and the boundaries of hearing are shifted – for both composers, the most important exercise in saving humanity.
