On February 2nd, 2023 at 7 p.m., the new musical theater piece Philoktet based on the dramas by Sophocles, André Gide and Heiner Müller by Samir Odeh-Tamimi will celebrate its premiere at the Eclat Festival, with the Neue Vocalsolisten and the Zafraan Ensemble.
The tragedy and failure of a multiple personality isolated from society are at the center of Samir Odeh-Tamimi’s musical theater Philoktet. Composed for the Neue Vocalsolisten and the Zafraan Ensemble, the linguistic rhythm and melody of old-Semitic languages as well as powerful images of the almost static stage concept convey the archaism of the ancient and yet disturbingly current myth. Odeh-Tamimi is particularly interested in the figure of Philoctetes, to whom a multiple psychological identity is attributed in Sophocles’ drama, but also in Heiner Müller and André Gide. Philoctetes – Sophocles’ only drama for which an opera has not yet been written – will now be the subject of his new music theater project, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
