For the production of berlin westhafen – harbor basin I+II – umschlagplatz klang (premiere of the Berlin new version) by Daniel Ott and Enrico Stolzenburg, the old and new of the harbor area becomes a lively sound space and the audience is an active part of the whole.
Depending on the location and perspective, everyone involved experiences a different overall composition. After the free movement within the first part, which is a hike between the individual musical stories and invites you to explore distances and sound landscapes, the second and third parts serve to examine a wide variety of spatial sounds on the way to the large hall. The visitor path follows the dramaturgy of the place itself. Just as every product ends up in the hall, every viewer experiences the finale as the logical end of their movement in the harbor after exploring various musical and spatial installations.
In three parts, visitors are musically guided through the harbor area and experience the harbor in operation as a culturally lively and musical place. The musicians become sound carriers – the sound of the instruments enters into dialogue with the harbor noises, the architecture, the light, the water, the machines on site.
At the same time, berlin westhafen – umschlagplatz klang (UA) becomes a project that integrates numerous musicians and ensembles from Berlin with a focus on contemporary music: KNM Berlin, Ensemble Mosaik, ZAFRAAN Ensemble, Ensemble LUX:NM, Sonar Quartett, Ensemble Kaleidoskop and Guests under the musical direction of Titus Engel, who has already made numerous contributions to the cooperation of the Berlin ensembles.
Many individuals become a collective work that places the importance of contemporary music production in the center of the city of Berlin – with national and international appeal. Only in Berlin is a project like this possible from the independent scene. Because only here is there such a density of professional musicians and ensembles connected by the desire to cooperate and strengthen the genre together.
