After swapping composer partners at Klangwerkstatt Berlin, the ensembles Lemniscate and Zafraan are now cheating on each other again on March 5th in Basel.
The Ensemble Lemniscate from Basel and the Berlin Zafraan Ensemble take the risk of pushing each other out of their respective “musical-aesthetic filter bubbles”: both ensembles allow themselves to be influenced by the other and dictate a concert program. The result is two concerts, each with an ensemble playing compositions from each other’s close range.
The basic idea is a bidirectional exchange that addresses the limited curatorial view of the program makers: sooner or later, all ensembles form a circle of composers who are particularly close to them, composers with whom they often work, who share basic aesthetic principles. This is exactly where this project is looking for a gap that should be expanded: Lemniscate is curating a program for Zafraan of pieces by composers close to Lemniscate, with possibly “foreign” aesthetic approaches. The same thing happens the other way around: Zafraan puts together a program for Lemniscate, with composers “close” to them. The membrane of the musical proximity of new music ensembles, which is normally only partially penetrable, is thus broken down. Through external control, both ensembles expose themselves to the possibility of being confronted as performers with music that they would not normally bring to the stage.
