On April 10, 2018, the Zafraan Ensemble will be a guest in the “South Side at Night” series at the Stuttgart Theaterhaus. You can hear works by Giacinto Scelsi, Stefan Keller and Alexander Schubert as well as world premieres by Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Josep Planells Schiaffino and Nicolai Worsaae.
With the program in the Stuttgart Theaterhaus, the Zafraan Ensemble celebrates rhythm – not in the sense of the numerical ratios of durations, but rhythm as a sequence of sound energies, as a catalyst and liberator of sound.
The arc leads from Giacinto Scelsis’ Okanagon , which conjures up a dark, earthy ritual with tam-tam and the low strings of harp and double bass, to the preoccupation with Cuban patterns and stereotypes of jazz.
The composition commissions for this concert went to Samir Odeh-Tamimi, with whom the Zafraan Ensemble has been collaborating for a long time, as well as to Josep Planells Schiaffino and Nicolai Worsaae – young composers whose musical terrain Zafraan is exploring for the first time.
