The Zafraan Ensemble is pleased to present its new half-yearly program “People aren't sounds, are they?”, which includes five innovative concert projects in Hamburg and Berlin.
What exactly is communicated through the medium of sound is a matter of interpretation and lies essentially in the ears of the listener. It can be everything or nothing, noise or resounding silence. But to what extent are man-made sounds heard as such? And when do we start talking about meaningful sounds or art music?
These questions are difficult to answer on their own. What is clear, however, is that music can reflect all forms of human coexistence: in the organization of sounds as well as in the social contexts when making music. The music can also reach the limits of the noisy and linguistic.
In the upcoming programs, the Zafraan Ensemble will examine a wide variety of sound constellations, freed from the classic stage fixation: from togetherness to anonymous organization in the crowd.
How is an ensemble viewed from the outside: as a group of individuals or as a homogeneous mass? How does the listener view themselves in the audience? Why and how is independence given up? What is freedom and what are its limits? Are musicians only perceived in relation to their instrument or as personalities? Do they also have to know each other personally? How interchangeable are partners? Is being there everything? Be there!
