Anniversary Concert I: Iris ter Schiphorst
On 31st March 2026 at 7:30 p.m., we will kick off our concert series in honour of Iris ter Schiphorst – first stop: Sendesaal Bremen!
Iris ter Schiphorst is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music. Her work combines political awareness with poetic power, sensual sonority and formal radicalism – always supported by a direct connection to the audience. Starting with classical piano training, Iris ter Schiphorst left the traditional path early on, played electric bass in punk, new wave and funk bands, and found her way to contemporary music through her own lyrics and influences from Dieter Schnebel, Luigi Nono and others.
To mark Iris ter Schiphorst’s 70th birthday, the Zafraan Ensemble is organising a series of concerts in 2026, with the composer closely involved in the concept – from the programme selection to the publication. A representative cross-section of her instrumental music will be presented, bringing her multi-layered artistic vision to life.
A special highlight will be the performance of ‘Hyper-Dub’ (2022) together with Dirk von Lowtzow (Tocotronic). The series is intended as a tribute to an oeuvre that is as genre-spanning as it is politically aware, continuing the fruitful collaboration between the Zafraan Ensemble and Iris ter Schiphorst.
