CELLS – Bremen plus Berlin
In the coming years, the Zafraan Ensemble will realize various cooperation projects with regional, national and international ensembles for new music. Each of these ensembles has created a profile that is characterized by a special line-up with a personal touch and its own repertoire, including collaboration with selected composers. The aim is to establish a form of exchange in which the ensembles inspire each other over a longer period of time, exchange ideas, learn from each other and build connections, not least with the audience. As part of this idea, after projects with the ensembles Court-Circuit (Paris), L’Itinéraire (Paris), Taller Sonoro (Seville), a collaboration with the ensemble New Babylon from Bremen was initiated, which also celebrates its 10th anniversary with this project -year anniversary celebrated.
The work Cells, composed by Hanspeter Kyburz, which forms the core of the program, symbolizes the collaboration and exchange between the ensembles in a musical and almost theatrical way. In this work, Hanspeter Kyburz deals with processes of chaotic, unstable, living, complex systems, which are inspired by the sociological and scientific-theoretical reflections of Niklas Luhmann. The composer is interested in the self-organizing structures, the interplay of distance and approach as a contrast to the static, constructed.
The meeting of self-organized cells and the process of their subsequent reorganization was also the thematic starting point of the two new works by Anna Korsun and Andreas Paparousos. With her work Apalo Angigma, Anna Korsun has created a continuously moving, gentle sound in which the two ensembles come together not only instrumentally, but also singing and humming. In 12 • 1 by Andreas Paparousos, 12 instruments meet in a highly energetic competition with their electronic alter egos. The works DIS-A.(ppearance) by Ying Wang and Sometimes II by Iris ter Schiphorst complete the program with their politically dark, sarcastic but also poetic contributions to the encounter between people and systems.
