Martin Smith (cello), born in Sydney (Australia), studied cello at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole in Florence with Natalia Gutman, and at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin with Prof. Eberhard Feltz. As a soloist he has appeared with several renowned ensembles and has given concerts with the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, the Lyon Chamber Orchestra, the Berlin Chamber Soloists, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and the Esbjerg Ensemble, and at concert venues such as the Wigmore Hall London, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Mariinsky Theater Sankt Petersburg and the Musée du Louvre Paris. He worked with many important composers such as John Adams, György Kurtág, Thomas Adès, Mats Larsson Gothe and Salvatore Sciarrino, and played chamber music with Midori Goto, Leon Fleisher, Menahem Pressler, Kolja Blacher and Heinrich Schiff. His previous work has also taken him to many international music festivals, such as the Ravinia Festival, the Piatigorsky International Cello Festival, the Pablo Casals des Prades and the IMS Prussia Cove Festival. Martin Smith has received several awards, including the ECHO Klassik, the Australian Music Foundation Award and the KPO Young Performer of the Year Award.
